The Nutcracker's Birthday is December 6th, 1892. Its birthplace is Mariinsky Theatre, Saint-Petersburg. From the playbill of the period we learn that it was ballet in two acts and three episodes and was put together by great Marius Petipa. The plot is borrowed from E. Hoffmann's fairy tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and that dances were composed by L. Ivanov to the score of P. Tchaikovsky. ![]() ![]() ![]() Marius Petipa.....................Lev Ivanov.................Peter Tchaikovsky

V.Krasovskaja compared the Waltz of the Snow Flakes with a prologue in the Sleeping Beauty: "While in the dances of his fairies Petipa expressed unruly, unstoppable and unconquerable life’s vigor, Ivanov showed us magical dream, the still of the winter that hides nature’s formidable forces." The ballet as staged by Petipa and choreographed by Ivanov was greatly loved by dancers and audiences alike, but despite of its popularity was dropped from Mariinsky’s repertoire 31 years after its premiere. Version of The Nutcracker to be presented this year at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion was staged by V. Vainonen on February 18, 1934. Galina Ulanova and Konstantin Sergeev were engaged for the premiere. It is Christmas Eve at the private house - a large but cozy home, full of family heirlooms and echoing with chimes of the old grandfather clock. And in the center is the magnificent Christmas tree with many shiny packaged presents under it. ![]() Photo circa 1934. Act I. The first act of family joy is replaced by nightmare vision in which the battle between Nutcracker and the Mouse King takes place. The third and the final episode transports us to the wonderful world of magic, world where dreams come true. ![]() Galina Ulanova & Kontantin Sergeev.
